Shop Seattle’s newest outdoor market on Saturdays in Pioneer Square

The recent opening of the Seattle Square outdoor market on Saturdays in Pioneer Square’s Occidental Park — “Seattle’s newest outdoor market in its oldest neighborhood” — was a pleasant surprise. The setting was as pleasing as the crafts. The weather was just right, warm, but not hot. The sun-dappled square was lovely underneath the canopy of trees. Craftspeople had booths and tables next to Native American totem poles and were surrounded by historic Pioneer Square buildings. The goods were hand-crafted, rather than “crafty.” And the food wagons were tempting, with upscale street chow ranging from organic ice cream to sloppy joes. This is a market you’ll want to visit this summer.

With perhaps three or more dozen vendors, it was a nice turnout for the first event. I saw some artists I’ve seen at other fairs and markets, and some new ones, as well. Barbara Pronsato was there with an adorable and kitschy collection of cards she created with color-saturated vintage cookbook photos. Shamila Jiwa had a summery collection of jewelry featuring labradorite, carnelian and turquoise. Alexa Baehr brought her Coffee Purses made from recycled coffee bags and Busara Teuber of Ilee Papergoods had her silk-screened and letterpress cards and stationery.

Shoppers leisurely perused the goods, including silk-screened T-shirts and handmade clothing (great summer skirts), baby clothes, market bags and etched drinking glasses with patterns made to order. There was also a table of Marilyn’s Nut Butters (try the Chipotle Chocolate Pecan).

The booths selling collectibles and vintage knick-knacks had some interesting treasures. I found a set of four 1970s-era coffee cups (just like my Mom’s) for $9 and a tin recipe box circa early 1960s for $3.

The Seattle Square market runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Saturday through September 25. Hopefully, it will continue to grow throughout the season.
